Exhibition: 20th Anniversary of Arina Tanemura

Arina Tanemura (種村有菜) published her first manga in 1997 and is still doing it up to now. Some of her works got international success, just talking of mangas like Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne, Time Stranger Kyoko, Full Moon wo Sagashite, Shinshi Doumei Cross and Idol Dreams. In 2017 she is celebrating her 20th anniversary and for this a special exhibition is held at Tokyo!
For the exhibition over 150 original works were selected out from Tanemura’s best known mangas which visitors can enjoy watching. All are displayed in single frames and have some short descriptions of Arina Tanemura added, some talking about the works and the history behind. Unfortunately these are in Japanese only.

The exhibition is separated by the single manga, however, the Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne area has the most works displayed there. For me, as a big fan of this story, it was especially great to see the original works closely and get some impressions of the technique Tanemura is using for drawing.

Surprisingly it was allowed to take photos (without flash) inside the exhibition. At the end they also have two photo spots. If you are alone, a nice staff will help you taking photos there. He even could speak a little English.

For sure, special good are made for this exhibition, which you only can get there. These include different cookie and coffee boxes, a big variety of key holders, badgets and clearfiles, but also mini towels, book marks, picture prints and even more. If you are a fan, take some money with you and enjoy this limited-time shopping! Big fans even can take the chance to buy one of the original works of Tanemura, however, prices for these are ranging between 20,000 to 50,000 yen. And for sure, I also couldn’t resist buying something from the goods.

The exhibition is opened from June 21th to July 3rd, a very short period, which you shouldn’t miss. Tickets cost 1,300 yen. You find it at the Seibu Gallery (西武ギャラリー) in Ikebukuro, just a few minutes walk away from the station. You only need to enter MUJI shop and go up to the second floor.

If you are planning to go, check out the event website for more information (Japanese only).
