Flying Penguins at the Sunshine Aquarium in Ikebukuro
Sunshine City is one of the top spots you should visit when you are in Tokyo’s district Ikebukuro. The commercial complex is huge and includes many facilities for shopping, restaurants, theme parks like J-World and Namja Town and even an observatory, planetarium and an aquarium. Last one is the thing I want to recommend to you today!
The Sunshine City complex was already constructed in 1978 and this is also the time when the Sunshine Aquarium (サンシャイン水族館) opened. Back in 2011 it got renovated. However, the penguin area just celebrated its renewal open on Wednesday, 12th July 2017, with the Penguin Heaven! And we were crazy enough to visit it right away on Sunday.
At the new attraction visitors get the impression that the penguins are flying not only above them. Because it is situated on the roof-top and you can see houses through the tank, it looks like the penguins are flying in Tokyo’s sky. A really impressive construction, you should see with your own eyes.
See them in action!
For sure, penguins are not the only animals to see at Sunshine Aquarium. Staying at the roof-top area called Marine Garden, there you also can find sea lions, pelicans and super cute otters. They have the Kanaloa Café there, too, so you can sit down and take a break there. After sunset the Marine Garden has a special light up.
The first floor of the aquarium is called Ocean Journey and this is also what you can see there. Several tanks shelter countless fishes, octopuses, crabs, corals, squids, jellyfish and more. The Sunshine Lagoon is the biggest tank there and under water performances are held there. You also can walk through a jellyfish tunnel.
The second floor takes you on a Waterfront Journey, talking about rivers, lakes and the coastal area. So there, you mainly can see different kinds of smaller fishes, frogs, turtles, seaweed and so on. At the background some bigger tanks are located showing up the sea life of places like the Okinawa Sea, the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean and the Great Barrier Reef. These include amazing colors! Surely, the aquarium also includes a gift shop with a lot of souvenirs.
Sunshine Aquarium is opened every day from 10 am to 8 pm (April to October) or 6 pm (November to March). Last admission is one hour before closing, but this is subject to be changed. Prices range from 2,200 yen for adults, over 1,200 yen for youths (age 7 to 15) to 700 yen for children (age 4 to 6). For more information, please visit their website.
Because of the new Flying Penguin attraction it was very crowded on Sunday. The aquarium decided to hand out time tickets, which allows you to enter the aquarium within a specific time window without lining up for a long time. However, when we have been there at 2.30 pm we got out ticket for 5 pm. So keep this in mind, if you are planning your visit. Sunshine Aquarium is informing about this issue on their Twitter account.
And as usually at the end, I have a small photo spam for you. Have fun!
