Yamagata 1-day-tour Itinerary

Most of Yamagata tourist destinations, aside from some that are incredibly far off or require cars like the Ginzan Onsen, are within easy train distance from the main Yamagata Station. Therefore, you can clear most of the tourist destinations within a day, and stay a little more if you like to ski or hike a bit more.

Day 1
From Yamagata Station, walk to the Kajo park for a nice morning stroll and enjoy the fresh air. Get some breakfast around the surrounding town, and try some of the local delicacies like Yamagata Cherries or Yamagata Dashi. From the station, take the Senzan Line to Yamadera station, and hike for a couple hours through the peaceful mountain forest, and contemplate how the great poet Matsu Basho felt while writing his poems. You can make the hike in a couple hours, and once you are done, go back to Yamagata Station and take the JR bus to Zao Onsen Bus Terminal, and walk to the hot spring town to relax your day’s stress away.
