Gunma Access Guide

Gunma is relatively close to the Metropolitan area, and therefore is a great destination for those that want to get out of the urban center and experience rural Japan, without wanting to go too far out of the way or spend too much money. While there aren’t any airports in Gunma, you can still get to the prefecture from other nearby prefectures, or take the train or express bus directly there.
Unfortunately, there are no direct plane rides from Narita to Gunma. This means that, if you really need to take the plane, you must take it to one of the nearby prefectures, such as Toyama, Niigata, or Fukushima prefecture. Fukushima Airport is the closest, and costs 20,000 yen one-way.
Taking the train and Shinkansen is the best way to get to Gunma. If you are planning on going to the Kusatsu Hot Springs, you should take the train from Shibuya to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station, which costs about 3000 yen. Without taking the limited express, it takes 3 hours and 15 minutes, but with an additional 1680 yen you can get there 30 minutes earlier. By taking the Shinkansen, you can get there 35 minutes earlier, but there is not much difference.
If you are tight on money, you can also take a nightly express bus for 1000 yen, which will take you to Gunma in 3 hours.
