About this sight

Dedicated to Kabuki performances, this theater is the fifth incarnation of a building originally built around 1899. Subsequently destroyed after fire, the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and air raids during the Second World War, the current structure was rebuilt after the addition of the Kabuki-za Building by Kengo Kuma and Associates architects using parts and materials from the previous building. The theater shows kabuki, dramatic plays performed by male actors donning elaborate, bright masks. Performances last approximately four hours (matinees begin around 11 am, later shows at roughly 4 pm) with English and other language audio guides for hire. Same-day tickets are also available to watch single acts of plays, but these typically sell out very quickly. Please check the official website for exact schedule details. Wheelchair accessible seats and companion seats are also available. Bookings must be made in advance by telephone. (+81-3-6745 -0888).
