About this sight

An old girl's school designed by the famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright and Arata Endo, this venue now serves as a function center and is open to the public for viewing when not in use by alumni. Designated an Important Cultural Property in 1997 after a lengthy battle to save the aging building, the Christian-oriented Jiyu Gakuen Girl's School (Myonichikan), or the School of the Free Spirit (House of Tomorrow), is the only one of two examples of Wright's works in Japan to retain its original appearance. The school became co-educational in later years, and famous kindergarten alumni include Yoko Ono and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
