About this sight

Located on the outskirts of old Edo, these grounds hold the remains of what was once Denma-cho Prison and Execution Grounds. The structure held inmates ranging from male to female, and high-ranking officials to common peasants. A large bronze bell, which rang during executions as a sign of Buddhist solemnity, can still be seen today. After the prison's reign, a temple was built on the park grounds to house the spirits of those who lost their lives in Denma-cho. Today, the park holds large shade trees and a small koi pond, located in the middle of this historically-relevant site.
