About this sight

A short walk north of Himeji Station, this castle is located on top of a hill. It is one of the best examples of early 17th-century Japanese castle architecture and considered one of Japan's most spectacular castle for its well-preserved castle grounds, comprising 83 buildings. Because of its brilliant white exterior, the castle is also known as White Egret Castle or White Heron Castle. Himeji Castle has remained intact for over 400 years. In 1993, it was registered as UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition, certain parts of the castle are designated Special Historic Sites as well as designated National Treasures.
