About this sight

Located on the grounds of Kotoku-in Temple and approximately 5-10 minutes from Hase Station on the Enoden electric railway line, this bronze adaptation of Amida Buddha stands 13.35 meters tall. Embodying enlightenment and compassion, the Great Buddha of Kamakura (Daibutsu) was built in 1252 and is the second-tallest representation of Amida Buddha in Japan. The Great Buddha of Kamakura (Daibutsu) has been standing freely since 1495 due to a series of natural disasters destroying the temple surroundings in the 14th and 15th centuries.
