About this sight

Gakuenji Temple, built in 594, is a quiet temple surrounded by lush forests. Covered by trees, the temple is swathed in a mysterious shade even in the daytime. It is a popular spot for leaf peeping, and is famous for its maple leaf tunnel in autumn.

While it is certainly fun to walk on a royal red carpet padded with leaves, do watch your step as it can be slippery, and make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. The historical Japanese warrior monk, Musashibo Benkei, was said to have visited this place, and as with many spots related to this famous character, we recommend all those who love history to come visit this place.
