About this sight

A Buddhist temple that was built in 860 at the order of Emperor Seiwa, this temple is Japan's oldest building made of beechwood. The buildings are situated on a mountain, one of them on the edge of a cliff overlooking a valley below. Risshaku-ji Temple is commonly known as Yamadera Temple.
