About this sight

Located close to the Matsumushi streetcar station, this historic site is known for its association with the Emperor Gotoba. The 800-year-old Japanese hackberry tree has been a recognised landmark of the Kumano pilgrimage route. The site was preserved at the request of locals, who opposed its demolition for a new road in the city's plans. Matsumushi is the name for the bell crickets that can be heard singing during their short life-cycle every year.
