About this sight

This beautiful waterway was built during the Meiji Period to transport people and freight from Lake Biwa to the urban landscape of Kyoto. Today, the canal is a historic site and is mostly used as a water supply for irrigation and fire fighting. After visiting the canal, tourists can head to the Lake Biwa Canal Museum of Kyoto to learn more about the waterway’s history.
