About this sight

Located right both the Sumiyoshi Station or Sumiyoshi Toriimae Station, the Sumiyoshi-taisha Shrine is a landmark in central Osaka. It is one of the most visited shrines in Japan for hatsumode, first prayer for New Year's Day. This shrine was once closed to the sea, which is related to its name sumi, meaning clear, and yoshi, meaning fortune and still attracts people who pray for protection during voyages. The vermillion arched bridge and 600 stone lanterns donated by the merchants of Osaka and Sakai are also attractions within the temple complex.
