About this sight

This museum is dedicated to Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold, a German physician, botanist, and traveler. He became well-known through his studies of the Japanese flora and fauna, as well as the introduction of Western medicine in Japan. He arrived in Japan in 1823, working as a doctor for the Dutch East Indies Company. After completing his research, he introduced his findings to Europe. In addition, he founded the Narutaki School where he started teaching Western medicine to help modernize the field in Japan. His daughter, Kusumoto Ine, became the first female Japanese doctor.
