About this sight

This memorial hall commemorates Marc Marie de Rotz, a French missionary who came to Shitsu in 1879. During his missionary work, he made an effort to help the poverty-stricken people of Sotome and pass on practical knowledge and new technologies, teaching about fishing, architecture, flour milling, extracting vegetable oil, making bread, farm tools, and more. The hall, a nationally-designated important cultural heritage site, was built in 1885. Father de Rotz's personal items, such as his favorite organ, are also kept here.
