About this sight

Housed in a building that was once Nagasaki Custom's Kudarimatsu Office, this museum showcases over 300 craft and other ornamental pieces made out of bekko, or tortoiseshell. Tortoiseshell was once a luxury item used to make jewelry boxes, combs and brushes. Since around 1700, when they established themselves in Nagasaki, Japan's bekko artisans were considered to be the world’s elite. The museum building is an important cultural asset.
