Located next to Ueno Park in Iga Ueno, Danjiri Museum provides a wealth of information on the annual Ueno Tenjin Festival which is held each October and features on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
The Ueno Tenjin Festival includes a Mikoshi Shine procession, followed by hundreds of people dressed up as terrifying demons. The Hyorotsuki Oni demons are particularly menacing as they purposefully stagger towards unsuspecting children within the crowd in order to make them cry, a traditional custom welcomed by local parents who believe that it purifies and toughens them.
The museum displays many of the actual masks used in the festival and houses three danjiri (festival floats). Upstairs visitors can rent ninja costumes for the day from the 'Ninja Henshin Dokoro' (a ninja transformation and tourist information spot).
