Japan's first public art museum focusing on contemporary art, this venue overlooks Hiroshima City from Hiyajima Park. Designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa, it was established in 1989 and endeavours to exhibit works from a diverse range of artistic genres and practices. The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art also administers the Hiroshima Art Prize, a project honoring artists who best express peace and the "Spirit of Hiroshima". Previous recipients include Yoko Ono, Issey Miyake and Daniel Libeskind. The museum also features an outdoor open-air exhibition area displaying a number of sculptures by Japanese and international artists.
