About this sight

This large piece of sand art is located on the Ariake Beach in Kotohiki Park. The park has been designated as one of Japan's national scenic spots, the beach as one of Japan's top 100 beaches. Zenigata Sunae literally translates to "sand art in the shape of a coin" and can be seen from the observation platform on Kotohiki Hill. From east to west it measures 122 meters, 90 meters from north to south, and its circumference is 345 meters. The depicted coin is a Kan’ei coin, Kan’ei referring to the era of the same name between 1624 and 1643 in which this type of coin was introduced. Every six months in spring and fall, this piece of sand art is restored.
