About this sight

Standing 6.2 meters high, this monumental statue situated in front of Minami-Ibaraki station in the city of Ibaraki, just outside Osaka, is the creation of Kenji Yanobe, one of Japan's most well-known contemporary artists. Yanobe created the sculpture in response to the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown of 2011 which occurred alongside the Great East Japan Earthquake. An intrepid-looking boy in a golden-hued hazmat suit, Sun Child was created to provide hope and courage to not only disaster victims, but to everyone in Japan.
