About this sight

Located on Shikoku Island, this secluded, mountainous valley is well known for its thatched roof farmhouses and ancient vine bridges. Due to its remoteness, Iya valley has served as a retreat for defeated samurai and other refugees. Members of the famous Taira clan are said to have entered the region after losing the Genpei War to the Minamoto clan at the end of the Heian Period (794-1185).
