About this sight

This 360-year-old pine forest in Karatsu was originally planted by Terazawa Hirotaka, a feudal lord of the early Edo period (1603-1868). The forest was meant to act as a countermeasure against the strong winds and tides in Karatsu Bay. With a width of 400-700 meters, a length of about 4 km, and a total area of 240 hectares, it also used to be referred to as The Black Pine Forest of 1 Million Trees. The popular tourist spot is listed as one of the 100 most beautiful places in Japan.
