About this sight

Directly translating to "first bridge", this bridge serves as the traditional entrance to Okuno-in Temple up on Mount Koya. It is about a 15 minute walk from the town center. Visitors are asked to bow in respect before crossing. The road that crosses the bridge here leads to the largest cemetery in Japan housing over 200,000 tombstones. At the far end of this cemetery complex is the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi, also known as Kukai, who was the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism.
