Koyasan Danjo Garan (Sacred Temple Complex)
Danjo Garan Temple was opened by monk Kukai as a place for secret training.
Located in front of Kangaku-in, a training ground for the monks living on Mount Koya, this pond, also known as Lotus Pond, was built to relieve suffering among citizens during a great draught in the Meiwa era (1764-1772). The small altar on the island in the middle of the pond enshrines an image of the Dragon King Zennyo and Buddha's ashes, which are said to have miraculously cleared the draught. In order to commemorate this event in history, scriptures are read at the site every year on October 17th.
