About this sight

[NOTICE: Zuigan-ji is undergoing renovations until March 2018. The main hall will be closed through March 2016. Instead, visitors can tour alternate buildings that are not normally open to the public.] Originally founded in 828, Zuigan-ji is situated on sprawling grounds near Matsushima Bay. The current structure was rebuilt by feudal lord Date Masamune in 1609. Site attractions include a cedar-lined path on the way to the temple, statues housed in a row of caves, and the Zuigan-ji Art Museum.
