For most people, this is where your onsen adventure in Hakone starts. First opening its doors in 1919, the station is home to the Odakyu line and its famous Romancecar train that links Hakone with Shinjuku, as well as the Hakone Tozan train line.
The latter is one of the most scenic train lines in Japan, trailing along beautiful mountainous terrain. In mid-June, hydrangeas along the train line come into full bloom, treating passengers to an amazing view as they ride up the mountain.
The station also has a large store selling a variety of delicious ekiben (bento meals to be eaten on the train) – a must try if you're taking the Romancecar back towards Tokyo.
