Gion

About Gion

Gion refers to the area from Yasaka Shrine in the east to Kamakawa in the west. It is not very big, but it is a concentrated pocket of the traditional cultural essence of Kyoto. The most famous attraction is Hanami Koji. You will see low Machiya huts built several hundred years ago. At night, in the alley, you will encounter geisha. The Gion Kobu is the largest flower street in Kyoto. There are a lot of senior Ryotei, mostly located in very low-key, log colored, old houses. Open the warm curtains and you will enter into another lively and colorful world. In addition, the annual Gion Festival in Kyoto is the highlight of the summer. During the festival, people play music using flutes, drums and bass drums on the gorgeously decorated "yamahoko". The whole street is alive with the beat. After the tour, there are all kinds of roadside stalls and night markets, which attract more than 100 million people every year.
