Ueno

About Ueno

Ueno is in Taito, with Ueno Station sitting in the center. Ueno is the starting point of railway networks linking Tokyo and northeast Japan, hence the nickname “the North Gate”. As the hub of over 6 railway lines including JR Shinkansen, Ueno is known for the convenience factor. In Ueno, you will find the oldest park in Japan – Onshi Park. On the weekends, there are always street performers. It is also the most popular place to visit and appreciate the sakura in the Spring. In the summer, Shinobazu Pond offers a pleasant view of blossoming lotus. Inside the park is Tokyo Onshi Ueno Zoo, the oldest zoo in Japan. You will also find Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, the National Museum of Western Art, the National Museum of Nature and Science and the Tokyo National Museum. Exhibitions change throughout the year, offering new delights for art and culture lovers. Another highlight is the great number of shopping streets, the most popular of which is AME Yoko. Stores and boutiques fill both sides of the street, offering a diverse and satisfying shopping experience. From daily items to imported luxury goods, you will find anything your heart desires, all at reasonable prices. No wonder the streets are always filled with excited shoppers and happy noises! A 20-minute walk from Ueno Park will get you to the Hongo Campus of the University of Tokyo, the No.1 university in Japan. From Yasuda Auditorium and the Red Gate (Todai Akamon), attendance is a dream that burns in the hearts of many Japanese students. The time-honored buildings encapsulate the charm of the university.
